about

Percy Grainger collected Brigg Fair from Lincolnshire singer Joseph Taylor, in Brigg on 11th April 1905.

The song has travelled around the world, but being a Lincolnshire lass, I decided to record this version in celebration of my wedding day, which happened to be 5th August 2022...in Brigg!

lyrics

It was on the fifth of August, the weather hot and fair,
Unto Brigg Fair I did repair, for love I was inclined.

I got up with the lark in the morning, with my heart so full of glee,
Expecting there to meet my dear, long time I wished to see.

I looked over my left shoulder, to see who I could see,
And there I spied my own true love, come tripping down to me.

For it's meeting is a pleasure, and parting is a grief,
But an inconstant lover is, worse than any thief.

Oh the green leaves they shall wither, and the branches they shall die,
If ever I prove false to thee, to the boy that so loves me.
