Once I had a sprig of thyme, It prospered by night and by day, Until a false young man came a courting to me, And he stole all this thyme away. The gardener was standing by, I asked him choose for me, And he chose me the lily and the violet and the pink, But those I refused all three. Thyme it is the prettiest thing, And thyme it will grow on, And thyme it will bring all things to an end, And so does my time grow on. It's very well drinking ale, And it's nice to have a drop of wine, But it's far better sitting by a young man's side, That has won this heart of mine.

Betsy Walton 03:44
Betsy Walton is my name, I've brought myself to grief and shame, By loving one who loves not me, With sorrow now I plainly see. My grief is more than I can bear, I'm disregarded everywhere, Like a blooming flower I am cut down, I am the talk of all the town. Mark well these words he said to me, He said that he would marry me, May I never prosper night or day, If I deceive you he would say. but now the day is past and gone, That we were to be married on, He scarcely speaks when we we do meet, And strives to shun me in the street. I did propose on Sunday night, To meet once more my heart's delight, On the Humber banks where the billows roar, We parted there to meet no more. Since he is false a watery grave, I have this night resolved to have, My ghost and that of my infant dear, We will haunt him everywhere. As token that I died for love, There will be seen a milk white dove, Over my watery tomb to fly, There you'll find my body lie. These cheeks of mine once blooming red, Must now be mingled with the dead, From the deep waves to a bed of clay, Where I must sleep 'til judgement day.

Early one spring early one spring, I went on board to serve the King, I left my own sweet love behind, She oft times swore her heart was mine. For three long years I sailed the seas, My mind has never been at ease, In writing letters all to my dear, Nothing from her did I hear. Those three long years were past and gone, And to my home I did return, I went unto her father's hall, And for my love so loudly called. Your love young man I must deny, Her father he then made reply, She's married through the length of life, I pray you seek another wife. Curse all this gold and silver too, And curse all women that won't prove true, I'll sail yon seas till the day I die, And split the waves where bullets fly.

Reilly 04:25
As I walked out one evening clear down by a riverside, I overheard a maid complain the tears fell from her eyes, It is a dark and stormy night these words to me did say, My love is on the raging sea bound for Americay. My love he was a fisherman he age was scarce eighteen, He was as fine a young man as ever your eyes did see, My father he had riches great but Reilly he was poor, And because I loved a fisherman he could not him endure. John Reilly was my true loves name he lived down by the sea, My mother took me by the hand and unto me did say, If you be found of Reilly he must leave this country, For your father swears he’ll take his life and shun your company. Oh mother dear don’t be severe where would I send my love, My very heart lies in his chest as constant as a dove, Oh daughter dear I’m not severe here is one thousand pounds, Send Reilly to Americay to purchase there some ground. When she got the money to Reilly she did run, This very night to take your life my father charged his gun, Here is one thousand pounds in gold my mother sent to you, Sail off unto Americay and there I’ll follow you. It happened twelve months after she was walking by the sea, When Reilly he came back again and took his love away, The ship was wrecked all hands were lost her father grieved full sore, She held Reilly in her arms and lay dead on England’s shore. They found a letter in her hand and it was written in blood, Saying cruel was my father that thought to shoot my love, Fair maids take this warning listen to what I say, Never let the man you love sail to Americay.
